Growing Mint, Growing Memories
In a world where distance often separates people from the loved one, it’s easy to lose touch with the simple joys and traditions that connect us, technology bridges the gap, allowing for meaningful connections despite physical distance. In this blog, I will recount the experience of growing kitchen mint in a pot with my beloved grandmother, despite living in different provinces, using the power of video calls to share the joy of the valuable lessons and our bond through this timeless activity.
Our journey began with selecting the right pot and soil. Grandma advised me on choosing a pot with adequate drainage holes to prevent waterlogging, essential for the health of our mint. We picked a medium-sized clay pot, which provided ample space for the roots to grow and allowed for proper aeration. Additionally, we used well-draining potting soil mixed with compost to provide essential nutrients for our plant’s growth.
Our virtual gardening sessions continued as we cared for our mint plant. Grandma taught me the importance of watering mint regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Every day became a ritual of care and observation. I watered the mint with tenderness, marveling at the tiny shoots that emerged from the soil. My grandmother taught me the importance of patience and consistency in nurturing life. I placed the pot by my dorm window, where the mint could bask in sunlight and breathe in the fragrant air.
Through our video calls, we happily kept track of the progress of our mint plant, celebrating each new leaf and growth spurt. Grandma would often share her own stories about growing mint and the valuable lessons she learned over the years. Our joint effort not only strengthened our connection but also showed us how life can thrive even when we’re far apart.
